Announcing the 2015 Best Urban BMP in the Bay Award !

Beginning this Thursday, December 11, 2014, we will be accepting submissions for the 2015 BUBBA contest.

Do you design, construct, install, maintain or otherwise have a stormwater BMP that you are particularly proud of? Was it installed in 2010 or after? Does it exist in the Chesapeake Bay watershed (not necessary for the 'Outside the Bay' category)? Then you should consider submitting your project for consideration! Winner takes all and by that we mean $5,000 smackeroos!

The 411

  • $5,000 CASH grand prize
  • 7 different design categories (including one for OUTSIDE the Bay projects!)
  • Contest opens: December 11, 2014
  • Contest closes: February 15, 2015
  • Online voting to determine the grand prize winner begins in March 2015
  • Completely online submission process here
  • Webcast this Thursday on the contest

IMPORTANT: projects previously submitted are not eligible for consideration this year.

The Excruciating Details

Lancaster-Brewery-Company-Patio 2Designed to recognize innovators who have formulated new and innovative techniques for managing stormwater in the Chesapeake Bay watershed, theBUBBAs offer an avenue through which we can disseminate innovative techniques to communities who can benefit from the lessons learned during the implementation of these techniques. We understand that every urban BMP faces a unique set of challenges. The BUBBAs are not an opportunity to lament about the problems a project has faced, but to boast about the creative approaches groups have used to overcome those problems. By showcasing innovative best management practices and low impact design, we hope to promote the application of unique, effective solutions to stormwater management challenges throughout the watershed. The photo shown here is the 2014 winner: the Plum and Walnut Green Intersection traffic calming project. To learn more about this winning project or the other 2014 winners click here

In 2014, we received over 75 project submissions and over 1800 people weighed in during the public voting portion of our contest. This year we hope to have many more than that. Can you help us? Remember: contest closes February 15, that means you have just over two months to get those projects in!

7 Different Categories

  1. Harn-Rain-Garden-AfterResidential BMPs: A stormwater BMP or series of practices installed on a residential property.  Example projects include. Total investment in a homeowner BMP should generally be less than $5,000.  BMPs installed by homeowners, contractors or watershed groups are eligible.
  2. Innovative BMPs: Nontraditional and creative solutions for the management or mitigation of stormwater at a site.
  3. Ultra-Urban BMPs: Stormwater practices built in infill or redevelopment projects in urban areas with more than 75% site impervious cover
  4. Best Combination of BMPs in SeriesMorganStateProjects in this category utilized two or more BMPs or LID practices effectively in a series to treat stormwater. Successful projects in this category demonstrated their ability to function during heavy rainfall events and linked the built environment to the natural landscape.
  5. Best Habitat Creation in a BMP: projects that provide a unique blend of aquatic or upland wildlife habitat while still providing effective stormwater function are eligible for this category. Projects will receive extra points if the created habitat connects with existing habitat or waterways, to support enhanced function along a wildlife corridor. Last year this category received the least number of submissions. Now we know the projects are out there - so come on people, show us what you've got!
  6. Stream Restoration ProjectsSevern 2Applies to any project in the stream corridor (including zero order streams) that is explicitly designed to enhance the function, stability and ecosystem services of an urban stream.
  7. Best Innovative BMP Outside the Bay (BIBOB):NEW THIS YEAR this category is for projects that use nontraditional solutions for the management or mitigation of stormwater at a site located outside the Chesapeake Bay watershed which can be transferred to the Bay watershed - come on rest of the nation, show us what you got!

BUBBAThis Thursday we will be hosting a webcast - our last webcast of the season - on the Best Urban BMP in the Bay Award contest.
