Since 2005, the Alcatraz Garden Project has been restoring and replanting the historic gardens of Alcatraz Island. Irrigation water was being imported to the island from San Francisco to irrigate the dought-tolerant plants that were selected to restore the gardens. In an effort to achieve a more sustainable solution, WaterSprout designed and installed a rainwater catchment system to irrigate the restored historic gardens.

The rainwater is pretreated in a gravity sand filter and then gravity drained to storage in modular EcoRain tanks, totalling 5,000 gallons (below). Rainwater also is stored above above ground in polyethylene tanks totalling 10,000 gallons (above).

The public can access the island, but cannot tour the rainwater system.
Annual rainfall 24 inches.
