The American Rainwater Catchment Systems Association (, 501(c)3 tax-exempt nonprofit) is the preeminent U.S. educational and technical organization offering accreditation for rainwater harvesting professionals as well as assistance around the world. Today, ARCSA proudly announces its first international partnership in that effort with the International Rainwater Harvesting Alliance ( To formalize the occasion, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by IRHA’s Executive Director Vessela Monta and ARCSA’s President David Crawford.

IRHA was created in 2002 with the mission to reinforce and unify the movement of the Rainwater Harvesters and to promote rainwater harvesting as a management of a water resource. Amongst its objectives, the fulfillment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the role of harnessing rainwater for domestic, institutional and community use was a priority. The "Blue Schools” program was a flagship program to demonstrate the effectiveness of rainwater harvesting for securing safe drinking water in schools and to show students and their communities the benefits of collecting rainwater for domestic water and for kitchen farming. Fulfilling its other objectives, IRHA works to promote the value of rainwater harvesting as a tool for adaptation to climate change, to boost its position in the development plans at local, national and international level and to enhance the information and knowledge sharing in this field.

ARCSA’s mission is to promote sustainable rainwater harvesting practices to help solve potable, non-potable, stormwater and energy challenges throughout the world. The IRHA is the first of what ARCSA hopes are many international educational providers that will work with ARCSA toward common goals.

ARCSA and IRHA recognize the importance of easily replicable, community-based, action-oriented RWH projects as tools to educate the local populace. They agree to work for the inclusion of RWH within integrated water resource management strategies and to promote the practice of recharge, retention and use of rainwater. It is important to raise awareness, share knowledge, and increase local water capacity through RWH techniques and project implementation, resulting in local ownership and a shift of project management to non-governmental organizations, community-based organizations, and other stakeholders in developing countries.

ARCSA is gathering funds, experts and technical writers to create a comprehensive new national rainwater-harvesting manual and is soliciting tax-deductible donations for that and general operational purposes. In addition, ARCSA has many sponsorship and advertising opportunities. For more information, please contact Heather Kinkade, ARCSA Executive Director, at 512-617-6528 or
