Natural Rural Water Association "Fly-Ins"

This year, several water associations are opening up their "fly-ins" and other DC events - opportunities for their Water Citizen members to hear from (and tell their stories to) Members of Congress, federal agency personnel, and others interested in water. Innovative ways in which these important water communications are becoming more open include livestreaming of Washington visits (called "fly-ins"), a "drive-in" in which association members visit congressional offices within their home states, and a Capitol Hill Water Expo.

What is a "Fly-In"?

Each year around February-April, associations of water and wastewater utilities, state and local agencies, researchers, various water-related industries, and others bring their members together to Washington, DC, to meet with federal agencies and Members of Congress (and their staff), for their annual "fly-ins" (as in, members "fly in" from around the country).

The fly-ins occur at this time of year because this is the start of the Congressional calendar, when bills are first being formed and sent to the various Congressional committees that oversee issues and agency programs related to water resources, water quality, agriculture, science and technology (including research funding), security, etc. - as well as the committees that fund federal programs.

NRWA's Rural Water Rally Livestreaming NOW

In one of the most inclusive (and coolest) fly-in opportunities Water Citizen has seen, the National Rural Water Association's (NRWA's) Rural Water Rally is being Livestreamed NOW. Already this morning, we have seen presentations by EPA and the Association of State Drinking Water Administrators (ASDWA) on some of the challenges and opportunities for federal funding for small rural water systems. Water Citizen will send more information as available.

Other associations and congressional events provide greater opportunities for Water Citizens to participate at home and on Capitol Hill, including the National Ground Water Association's "Drive-In" (where members will visit congressional offices locally and participate in an online briefing), and an upcoming Water Infrastructure & Innovation Expo - part of Water Week 2014. Watch Water Citizen updates for further information.
