Describe the catchment and collection system, including total capacity (please include brands and suppliers as well as associated costs if available): Kroon Hall earned all five LEED points for water efficiency by incorporating many innovative water-saving and water-reusing features. Kroon Hall’s potable water usage is reduced to 81% below that of a comparable baseline building. Stormwater is collected from the roof and grounds and filtered through native aquatic plants. Wastewater collected from sinks and showers is added to the stormwater and used for all non-potable needs such as toilets and irrigation. Water demand is further reduced by the installation of low-flow plumbing and irrigation fixtures.
An underground tank below the service courtyard collects runoff from the southern part of the site and slowly discharges it, lessening the burden on New Haven’s combined sewer system. From the roof and the northern part of the site, a rainwater-harvesting system collects runoff and channels it to a pond at the border between the southern courtyard and Sachem’s Wood. Here, native wetland plants such as cattail, iris, and lotus remove impurities, including nitrogen, phosphates, and particulates, before the water is stored in a basement fitted FTC FRP Panel Type Water Storage tank and then directed for use either in irrigation or toilet flushing.
The rainwater harvesting system is expected to save approximately 500,000 gallons of potable water annually, and will satisfy at least six LEED credits, including two points for stormwater management and four points for water efficiency.

Kroon Hall, the new home of the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies, has been awarded LEED Platinum certification by the U.S. Green Building Council, Yale University announced. Under the LEED rating system for new construction, Kroon Hall was awarded 59 points, or seven more than required for the top rating of Platinum.
