John Hammerstrom

Mr. Hammerstrom was ARCSA's 2010-2011 President, served as Director during 2008-2009, is an Accredited Professional and has 23 hours of credit plus Design & Construction workshop toward ARCSA Rainwater Harvesting Master status. He is a graduate of Union College in Schenectady, New York, a retired U.S. Navy Commander, former Senior Engineering Test Pilot for the Grumman Aerospace Corporation and a retired international Captain for American Airlines.

While serving ARCSA as a Director and President, Mr. Hammerstrom created and guided a collaboration with the International Rainwater Harvesting Alliance (IRHA) and the International Rainwater Catchment Systems Association (IRCSA), formulated the "Joint Statement on Rainwater Harvesting" that was signed by 45 international rainwater harvesting organizations and distributed in nine languages on World Water Day, 2011; and spearheaded a drive that led to a potable rainwater entry submitted by ARCSA Director Jack Holmgreen winning a Gold Medal in the largest international drinking-water competition.

He initiated and collaborated with ARCSA Regional Representative Richard Jennings and the Board of Directors to create ARCSA's Mission Statement: "To promote sustainable rainwater harvesting practices to help solve potable, nonpotable, stormwater and energy challenges throughout the world." Among his other ARCSA responsibilities, he volunteered countless hours as the ARCSA webmaster for eighteen months, including during his tenure as President.

When not serving ARCSA or promoting rainwater harvesting and sustainability, he volunteers in his community as the President of his town's civic organization; Vice President of his homeowners' association; was chosen to serve on an influential Hurricane Evacuation Task Force for the Florida Keys; and competes in age-group U.S. Masters Swimming meets, most recently finishing ninth in the nation for his event.
